Kingston, Jamaica, October 15, 2018 /JamaicaPressReleases/ — Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke is a Brooklyn native and of proud Jamaican heritage. In the 115th Congress, Congresswoman Clarke serves on the Energy and Commerce Committee, the Committee on Small Business, and the Ethics Committee. She has also succeeded her pioneering mother, former City Council Member Dr. Una S. T. Clarke, making them the first mother-daughter succession in the history of the City Council.
Congresswoman Clarke is a recipient of the prestigious APPAM/Sloan Fellowship in Public Policy and Policy Analysis, has served on the New York City Council representing the Fortieth District in Brooklyn; and is the chair for the Multicultural Media Caucus. She also serves as Co-Chair of the Caribbean Caucus, where she has worked to build the relationship between the United States and the Caribbean community (CARICOM) on matters of trade, immigration reform, and direct investment through development programs.
Additionally, Congresswoman Clarke serves as Co-Chair of the Black Women & Girls Caucus, which develops programs to support the aspirations of African American women of all ages, and an At-Large member of the Congressional Black Caucus Executive Committee.
Kiwanis Club of New Kingston President, Dianne O’Brien Harris said “Our Lunch talk with Congresswoman Clarke promises to be a very enlightening one, we will be focusing on strengthening ties with the Jamaican diaspora as well as use the proceeds from the event to kick start a programme to have an intervention for children with special needs”. She went on to say, “There aren’t much allowances for children with special needs in Jamaica at the moment, from proper health care to basic education. We have a far way to go as a society on matters of caring for our disadvantaged youth.”
At the 2018 National Awards Ceremony to be held on Heroes Day, Congresswoman Clarke will be bestowed with yet another distinguishing accolade. She will be honourably awarded with an Order of Distinction – Commander Class (CD) for distinguished contribution in safeguarding the Interests of Jamaican Nationals in the USA Diaspora on Immigration Matters.
Lunch Talk with Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, will be held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. 81 Knutsford Boulevard. Kingston 5 on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at 12PM. The event will be hosted by the Kiwanis Club of New Kingston in partnership with the Jamaica National Group. Admission cost $5,000 and proceeds are in aid of the Kiwanis Club of New Kingston’s Major project for 2018-2019, Intervention for Children with Special Needs.
